A hernia is a crack, opening, or hole in the fibrous connective tissue (fascia) that stabilizes muscles. If the layers of fascia in your abdomen (belly) weaken, hernias can develop. Your intestines are located in the part of your body called the abdomen, which is in the middle of your body. Where the fascial layers are frail, a gap may develop. The abdominal interior then pushes through the opening. It develops a little sac like to a balloon. The hernia sac is shown here. The hernia defect (hole) can allow an intestinal loop or other abdominal tissue to pass through and enter the hernia sac. You might be experiencing discomfort, excruciating pain, or other issues that could necessitate urgent surgery. Typically, a ventral hernia occurs around a surgical scar. This is where the surgeon makes the cut or incision to do the procedure. Anywhere else on the abdomen, including the belly button (navel), might experience it. Over time, a hernia does not get better. It might become bigger over time and won't go away on its own. Hernias can only be corrected surgically, however not all of them require it.
