Anal fistulas nearly invariably require surgery since they do not heal on their own. Laser surgery is the most effective treatment for anal fistulas. It is done with either general or local anesthetic. After the anesthetic wears off, the surgeon inserts a laser probe into the fistula hole and activates it, ablating the damaged tissues. Laser surgery for fistulas is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you'll be discharged the same day unless your doctor advises otherwise. You may need to take a few measures before your laser surgery to ensure that everything goes properly and that you recover quickly afterward. In advance, inform your doctor if you have any allergies (to specific drugs or otherwise) and if you take prescriptions for pre-existing diseases. In the days preceding the procedure, avoid smoking and consuming alcohol. On the day before the procedure, eat a small lunch. Avoid high-fat and high-carbohydrate meals.
