In GERD surgery, a technique to fortify the lower esophageal sphincter may be used. The method is known as a Nissen fundoplication. In this procedure, the surgeon encircles the lower esophagus with the top of the stomach. As a result, there is less chance of acid backing up in the esophagus since the lower esophageal sphincter is strengthened. In order to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Nissen fundoplication surgery is performed. During the surgery, a surgeon constructs a sphincter (a tightening muscle) at the base of the esophagus to prevent acid reflux. Most patients experience significantly fewer acid reflux symptoms after surgery.A surgical technique called a Nissen fundoplication is done to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
