Diagnostic laparoscopy is a procedure that enables a medical professional to see what's inside the abdomen or pelvis up close. The surgery is often performed under general anesthesia (when you are asleep and pain-free) in a hospital or outpatient surgical center. The method is carried out as follows: Below the abdominal button, the surgeon creates a small cut (incision). The incision is then closed with a trocar, a hollow needle, or a tube. The tube or needle is used to inject carbon dioxide gas into the abdomen. The gas aids in area expansion, providing the surgeon with additional workspace and improving their ability to examine the organs. The inside of your pelvis and abdomen can then be seen using a tiny video camera called a laparoscope, which is inserted through the trocar. If additional instruments are required to provide a clearer view of some organs, additional tiny cuts might be performed. Dye may be put into your cervix during a gynecologic laparoscopy so the surgeon can see your fallopian tubes.
