Laparoscopic hernia repair is similar to other laparoscopic procedures. General anesthesia is administered and a small incision is made at or just below the navel. The abdomen is inflated with air to allow the surgeon to see the organs in the abdomen.
A thin, lighted endoscope called a laparoscope is inserted through the incision. Hernia repair instruments are inserted through other small incisions in the lower abdomen. A mesh can be placed over the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall. Or the edges of healthy tissue can be sutured.
